“Old-growth mining” YES FUCKING – I’m going to use that.
And it’s not just an unsustainable activity in BC, it’s an unsustainable activity everywhere I can think of that has/had old growth forests (think tropical or temperate rainforests, boreal forest, etc.) and is replacing/has replaced them with plantations.
These new growth woodlands are not forests. They are plantations. The biodiversity is extremely low because nothing can live there; young trees provide very little in the way of habitat or nutrition for other species.
I’ve banged on about this for years, but in Sweden (where most old growth forest is gone and has been replaced by secondary growth plantation), reindeer – and the Indigenous livelihood activities associated with their husbandry – are literally dying out because the plantations simply do not produce the food reindeer need to survive. This puts enormous pressure on the reindeer herders to keep them alive through the winter, which makes reindeer husbandry a very high threshold activity, meaning that very few young Saami people are able or willing to continue the practice.
It’s cultural genocide, enacted (in part) through ecosystem destruction. Ecocide and genocide are intrinsically linked, and the replacement of old growth forest with timber or pulp/paper plantations, like all acts of capitalism and imperialist expansion, are inherently unsustainable.
seeing reddit refugees repeatedly hit their post limits and comment their thoughts on every reblog is kind of refreshing. site migration be damned these guys know how to blog
WGA’s asking people interested in all the tree law fun to also sign this petition about a god damned bitch of an unsatisfactory situation on another street on the Same FUCKING lot. NBC Universal (whose CEO is Mike Cavanagh just btw in case Ron Pearlman is listening) has started a construction project that completely removed the sidewalks from five different gates, in two cases forcing pedestrians to literally walk into oncoming traffic. In addition to being an ADA violation, it’s just flat out despicably evil of them and WGA’s asking for public support on this issue.
Can you link where you saw the WGA asking people to sign this?
Fair question! Sure thing! Legit great instinct to make sure! Here’s the tweet I got it from:
ALT
It’s both described and linked so that you can be sure it’s the real deal, and if you click through you can see it’s in response to Kenneth Mejia’s tweet about investigating Universal for the Tree Law stuff, hence the specific connection I cite at the start of the post

FYI if your employer does this, if they have done it for a long time especially, you and your coworkers could be owed huge amounts of unpaid wages and it would be an easy suit if there is a paper trail like this and your employer is placing strict requirements on your behavior while not at work. Employment lawyers generally work on contingency. Just food for thought.
you have signed the wizards contract. you have to draw wizard eating cantaloupe
I have done the deed. I hope the Wizard will return for more cantaloupe in my future. Also woohoo I solved a riddle I didn’t know existed! Yippee!!! @wizardsisananimal
somehow instead of saying “as a treat”, I’ve started using the phrase “for morale”, as if my body is a ship and its crew, and I (the captain) have to keep us in high spirits, lest we suffer a mutiny in the coming days.
and so I will eat this small block of fancy cheese, for morale. I will take a break and drink some tea, for morale. I will pick up that weird bug, for morale.
I’m not sure if it helps, but it does entertain me
